Biography

Dr. Brian J. Dykstra, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM is an FAA-designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) since 2001. He is Board Certified in Internal, Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine, and is authorized to perform FAA employee medical exams.

 

Dr. Dykstra is a retired USAF Colonel and Chief Flight Surgeon. He has more than 900 primary flight hours on 17 different airframes, including the flight decks of heavies (C17s & KC135s) and fighters (F15s & F16s). His service includes multiple deployments and more than 300 combat flight hours across 120 combat sorties. He served as a Squadron Flight Surgeon, Medical Group Senior Flight Surgeon, Medical Group Commander, and was the Indiana Air National Guard State Air Surgeon. 

 

Additionally, Dr. Dykstra is an advanced SCUBA diver and licensed private pilot, and actively flies a Cherokee Archer II. 

 

He is a uniquely qualified AME, having given many safety briefs, logging hours of flight deck time on heavies, rotary wing, and GA aircraft, and experiencing firsthand the stresses of flight, spatial-D, pressurization issues, and human factors.
