First-Time Applicants
Determine if you need a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Class Medical Certificate
Schedule a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class exam based on expectations for use of your certificate:
- Class 1 for a commercial license
- Class 3 for general aviation
Complete the MedXpress form
- You will need to complete FAA Form 8500-8 by creating an account at medxpress.com.
- Once you have submitted the form, bring the confirmation number to your exam.
List all of your medical & surgical history as outlined in the form, even medical issues and surgeries that have resolved.
- The most common medical issues that may be a challenge with first-time applicants are ADD, ADHD, and Asthma.
- You will need to disclose if you have ever been diagnosed and/or treated for ADD/ADHD or asthma.
- View the FAA Regulations and Disposition Table for ADD/ADHD
- View the FAA Regulations and Disposition Table for Asthma (as noted in the worksheet, I will need a clinical progress note for asthma within the last 90 days and possibly a breathing test—depending on asthma severity—at the time of your exam.)
